Aroma: Malty with hints of coffee and hops.
Colour: Jet black with one finger tan coloured head.
Taste: Bitterness is immediately noticeable without being
too forceful, the malt plays a key role in this, bring elements of coffee and
liquorice to the flavour profile with a hint of peatiness detectable. The
mouthfeel is on the thin without being too watery and carbonated, whilst the
lacing of Saaz hops is clearly evident reminding the drinker that they are
drinking a lager and not a beer.
Verdict: The flavours work well together to give a
distinctive flavour profile that is a world apart from it’s better known
lighter coloured counterpart. Malt plays a large part in bringing the flavours
together, whilst the hops bring up the rear and help round the beverage off.
However, it is let down by the lack of body and mouthfeel, which is more of a
problem with bottles than with pressurised kegs where it would be more suited.
