Beer Review: Harvey's Southdown Harvest

Name: Southdown Harvest

Brewery: Harvey’s

ABV: 5%

Style: Green Hop Beer

Location: Lewes, East Sussex

Aroma: Notes of caramel, lemon drops and honey, imbued with fresh grassy hops that give it a refreshing zing.

Colour: Hazy amber, with a one finger ivory coloured head.

Taste: A distinct bitterness is immediately apparent, then the grassiness from the hops hits you with a unique freshness that only comes from green hops. There is a soft medley of stone fruits hidden in the undergrowth followed by a mellow sweetness that is counterpointed by an intriguing tanginess that comes through the hops. The mouthfeel is soft and pillowy, verging on the creamy, which helps extract the full extent of the hop oils.

Verdict: The use of green hops gives the beer its distinct edge, over time the sweetness helps counteract the bitterness, while the hops impart a tangy, grassy quality that forms the beer’s distinct character. Everything from the malt bill to the use of hops is well balanced, and dovetails well with each other. This is a brilliant showcase of green hops, used to the best of their advantage.
