Beer Review: Salopian Lemon Dream

Brewery: Salopian

Style: Blonde Ale

ABV: 4.5%

Location: Hadnall, Shropshire

Aroma: Rather a hoppy, with distinctive notes of citrus fruit dominating the stage giving it a distinctive zesty edge, some malt rumble off in the background.

Colour: A vivid golden yellow, with a one finger white head.

Taste: Rather malty, with a hint of sweetness and some bitter backnotes. A potent taste of lemons is immedietely noticeable, giving off a notable tanginess that threatrens to overlap the other flavours. Meanwhile the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, perhaps a touch refreshing. This beer is best drunk lightly chilled, in order to appreciate the flavours at their best advantage.

Verdict: Although it could be considered a fruit beer due to the use of lemons in the brewing process, the flavour profile brought on by caramel maltiness and bitterness from the hops throws it into coventional golden ale territory. The distinctive citrus notes brought on by the use of lemons in the brewing process works well with the malty background notes, along with the grassy, bitter elements from the hops. The lemons gives off a tangy and piquant taste, which is more notable given the lack of sweetness in the brew, which somewhat leads it to dominate over other flavours, leaving the beer a little on the flat side when it comes to balance of flavours.
