Name: Sussex Best
ABV: 4%
Style: Bitter
Brewery: Harvey's
Location: Lewes, East Sussex
Aroma: A notable hoppiness comes through, followed by a strong whisp of malt. Hints of honey, caramel and grassiness follow along.
Colour: Amber brown with a fluffy two finger ivory colour head.
Flavour: Profound bitterness on the foreground followed by a caramel overtones, some sweetness, hoppiness is noticeable giving an aromatic grassy quality, acting as a neat counterpoint to the other flavours. Maris Otter malt is noticeable, giving much of its additional character and body. The mouthfeel is creamy, though a tad biscuity dry on the backend.
Verdict: An old school Sussex style best bitter with a noticeable grassy kick from the hops, dovetailed with a tangy caramel quality from the malt. Sweetness is somewhat at a minimum in contrast to the cask version where it is more noticeable. The flavours in bottle form don't balance as well as it's cask counterpart, making the taste rather average and a bit of a let down.
