Location: Long Melford, Suffolk
Aroma: Coffee dominates, with notes of dark fruits and malt on the backend.
Colour: Jet black with one finger white head, the head dissipates too quickly due to lack of adjuncts such as oatmeal or lactose.
Taste: A rush of coffee hits the tongue, medium bodied chewy mouthfeel, a background hoppiness is noticeable with a tinge of grassiness, without being too bitter. The backend is interstingly chocolatly, toffeish and smooth, given an intriguing counterpoint to the coffee flavours and roasted malt elements.
Verdict: A multi layered beer with an arsenal of flavours, the malt bill has been carefully considered, and delivered to an outstanding effect. Its quite obvious why this beer was so hugely succesful, and made a mark on the revival of Porters. Unlike its forebears, it doesn't try too hard on the roasted malt, and lets the other elements come through, given a balanced and rounded character.
